Artist Statement

Lumenos, the artistic collaboration between Cullen and Marchessault, explores the expressive potential of lumen prints—a unique, camera-less photographic technique. Using sunlight, photo-sensitive paper, and carefully arranged flowers and plant matter from their own gardens, the artists create breathtaking images that blur the lines between abstraction and botanical beauty.

Each artwork is a result of a delicate and fleeting process: once the plant matter is removed, the image must be digitally captured within seconds before the entire paper darkens. The final compositions, printed on fine art and Japanese Washi papers, capture fleeting moments of light and form.

This exhibition features 20 striking digital lumen prints, blending light, nature, and artistic precision. Each piece showcases the artists’ mastery of this rare photographic technique.

About Artists

Teresa Cullen and Robert Marchessault are partners living and working in Oro-Medonte ON north of Toronto. Their home and studios are situated on a 1-acre country property where they maintain gardens that serve as the source for their lumen prints. The artists have extensive separate individual careers as visual artists. They met as students in the Concordia University (Montreal) fine arts program, both completing BFA degrees, and later extending their studies: Cullen with BA in Classical Studies (Waterloo) and an MA from Sofia University (Palo Alto, CA), Marchessault with an MA from the University of Toronto.
