Artist Statement

"Edges-the outside limit of an object, area, or surface; the point immediately before something momentous occurs or someone loses control; an intense, sharp, or striking quality...

When I first started documenting the landscape from the aerial perspective, I wanted to be a witness to the impact that human activity has on our environment. With this observation there is the realization of how the landscape of western Canada has radically altered in just the last 100 years. Changing approaches to land management and the emergence of the corporate farming complex have accelerated some of these changes. I realized that I was interested in capturing some of the remaining areas of natural landscape and exploring how these areas intersect with our very real need for food production." - Heather Cline

About the Artist

Heather Cline is a professional artist based in Saskatchewan with a deep interest in public interaction. She has participated in residency programs and community engagement across Canada, including setting up a 'Story Collection' office in an inner-city storefront in Oshawa, Ontario, and riding combines in rural Manitoba.

Her recent work explores the radically altered terrain of Western Canada through aerial landscape paintings, based on observations from the passenger seat of a Cessna Skyhawk.

In spring 2023, Cline began a major collaborative project with the Nature Conservancy of Canada to explore Western Canadian landscapes through a conservation lens. She is working with NCC staff, volunteers, and stakeholders, engaging with conservation work both on land and in the air.

Cline holds an MFA from the University of Saskatchewan and has exhibited widely, with solo exhibitions at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery (Oshawa, ON), the Mendel Art Gallery (Saskatoon), and regional centres throughout Western Canada. Her work is in public and private collections across North America and Europe, including the Colart Collection, the Mendel Collection at the Remai Modern, and the Saskatchewan Arts Board.

The artist’s will be in attendance with thanks to Creative Saskatchewan.
